By assisting with the distribution of food, you help ensure that everyone has access to nutritious meals, contributing to the fight against food insecurity. Your involvement makes a direct impact on the lives of those who rely on these essential services, fostering a sense of compassion and community support.
In addition to helping others, volunteering in our food pantries provides a valuable opportunity for personal growth. You'll develop skills in organization, teamwork, and communication while working alongside dedicated volunteers and staff. This hands-on experience not only enriches your understanding of community needs but also allows you to connect with diverse individuals and create lasting relationships. Community Roots
What makes Community Roots unique is our nonprofit, self-sustaining status, which allows us to help support other programs in the Dayton area. We focus largely on youth empowerment through the Nursery, Farmers Market, and School Gardens. We have learned never to underestimate the power of youth; they continue to amaze us with their accomplishments.
Every summer, we work with local farmers and crafters to bring a Farmers Market to Dayton. It is an excellent time of year for friends and family to meet at the market and talk with farmers about their most recent harvests. We are always fortunate to have youth working at the market from the Comstock Youth Works program. Here at the market and the nursery, they learn customer service skills, plant and crop identification, and bring their own quality of teamwork and knowledge to our Community Roots family.
-
Farmers Market
Volunteering at our Farmer’s Market offers a unique opportunity to support local agriculture and promote sustainable practices. Helping local farmers and artisans contributes to the local economy and strengthens the community's food system. Engaging with community members fosters a sense of connection and spirit while encouraging healthy eating by providing access to fresh, locally grown produce.
In addition to making a positive impact, volunteering at our Farmers Market allows you to gain valuable skills in customer service, event organization, and teamwork. You'll learn about seasonal produce and sustainable farming practices while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of fresh goods and community activities. Join us in making a difference and experiencing the rewarding environment of the Dayton Farmer’s Market!
The Dayton Farmer’s Market operates throughout summer.

The AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program provides grants to organizations with a dual purpose: to engage Americans 55 years and older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs and to provide a high-quality experience for the volunteers.
Examples of RSVP Programs
Providing mentorship to teens in the juvenile justice system to tutoring and helping them to prepare for GED exams
Teaching resume and employment skill classes
Delivering meals and groceries to individuals with limited to no support.
-
School Gardens
Teach a child to grow their own vegetables, cook their own food, respect the land, and enjoy dirt under their fingernails—that is an education that will last a lifetime.
Teachers, farmers, and school interns teach children about planting, maintaining, and harvesting food for their schools.
Volunteering in school gardens is a fantastic way to support educational initiatives while promoting sustainability and healthy living among students. Your involvement fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to nature, inspiring students to appreciate the food they eat and the importance of sustainable practices.
School gardens are an innovative way to educate our youth about helping sustain themselves and sustain our planet.
-
