Community Roots is located in Dayton, Nevada, about 15 miles east of Nevada's capitol, Carson City. We provide beautiful, high-quality plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetable plants, which attract customers from Reno, Carson City, Silver Springs, Yerington, Winnemucca, and parts of Eastern California.
What makes Community Roots unique is our nonprofit, self-sustaining status, which allows us to help support other programs in the Dayton area. We focus largely on youth empowerment through the Nursery, Farmers Market, and School Gardens. We have learned never to underestimate the power of youth; they continue to amaze us with their accomplishments.
We are actively involved in creating and maintaining gardens in Lyon County schools. Students are educated about plant propagation, beneficial insects, and how to grow vegetables, which they harvest themselves to use in mealtime food preparation.
We work with local farmers and crafters every summer to bring a Farmer’s Market to Dayton. It is an excellent time of year for friends and family to meet at the market and discuss their most recent harvests with farmers. We are always fortunate to have youth working at the market from the Comstock Youth Works program. Here at the market and the nursery, they learn customer service skills, plant and crop identification and bring their own quality of teamwork and knowledge to our Community Roots family.

The Nursery
Our lovely garden center hosts a large variety of trees, shrubs, roses, perennials, vegetables, vibrant annuals, soil amendments, and pest management solutions. We take great pride in providing varieties that thrive in our harsh conditions as well as ornamentals and specialty items, and we are always sure to point out the more temperamental that may need to find just the right spot in your garden. So much more than a nursery, we are inspired by our community, youth, and potential to make change. School Gardens
Teach a child to grow their own vegetables, cook their own food, respect the land, and enjoy dirt under their fingernails—that is an education that will last a lifetime.
Healthy Communities Coalition and Community Roots are proud to team up with Lyon County School District to provide gardens in almost every school in the county. The goal is 100% school garden participation in Lyon County by 2018.
These gardens feature hoop houses, which are " low-tech greenhouses" that extend the growing season and outdoor gardens to keep the food supply growing during the summer and fall months.
