SCHOOL GARDENS
Teach a child to grow their own vegetables, cook their own food, respect the land, and enjoy dirt under their fingernails—an education that will last a lifetime.
Healthy Communities Coalition & Community Roots is proud to partner with Lyon County School District to promote school gardens in Dayton, Fernley, Yerington, and Silver Springs.
These gardens feature hoop houses, " low-tech greenhouses" that extend the growing season, and outdoor gardens to keep the food supply growing during the summer and fall.
Teachers, farmers, and school interns teach children about planting, maintaining, and harvesting food for their schools. School gardens are an innovative way to educate our youth about helping to sustain themselves and our planet.
