AmeriCorps and VISTA Members

Healthy Communities Coalition is proud to be the home for AmeriCorps members that give a year (or one summer) of volunteer service. From all parts of Lyon County, AmeriCorps are busy providing food for those in need, working with children in school gardens, teaching about good nutrition, providing services as Community Health Workers, providing information and resources to prevent and address opioid and other drug use, and so much more! AmeriCorps members receive extensive training during their term with Healthy Communities Coalition, including CPR and mental health “first aid.” They also earn their National Nutrition Certification, developed through Utah University. In addition, during their term they become certified as Community Health Workers.

One AmeriCorps service site is the Healthy Communities Coalition – Rural Health & Nutrition Initiative located at the former Dayton Valley Aquaponics greenhouse on River Road in Dayton.
AmeriCorps members also engage in community service such as partnering with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department during National Prescription Drug Takeback Days to collect unwanted prescription drugs for safe disposal.
AmeriCorps members also serve in each of Healthy Communities Coalition’s three food pantries located throughout Lyon County with sites in Yerington, Silver Springs and Dayton.
