Silver City, Nevada – United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) will host a morning of fun and educational activities for preschoolers and their parents on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 from 10am to noon.
The free event with United Way, which includes hands-on crafts, science and literacy activities and free books is for parents and their children 0 to 6 years. At the event Community Chest’s Nevada Families First will also offer a family resources booth and an obstacle course activity with prizes, and Healthy Communities Coalition will have a booth with free toothbrush kits and bicycle helmets. In addition, Nevada Health Centers and Nevada Health Link will have a table with treats, activities and prizes. Their outreach is aimed at helping Nevadans’ get health insurance information.
LOCATION: The annual event takes place on the lawn of the Silver City Schoolhouse community center at 385 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428. One need not live in Silver City to attend.
UWNNS supports parents with various resources as they nurture their children’s development, early literacy, health, nutrition and play. One of United Way’s goals is to double the number of children in northern Nevada who read proficiently by the end of third grade. With that goal in mind, UWNNS focuses on early childhood development and learning, kindergarten readiness, early grade success and strengthening families.
Nevada Families First, Community Chest INC is a Blue Ribbon Certified Parents as Teachers (PAT) Affiliate. PAT is a nationally-recognized, evidence-based home visiting model that connects families with child development assistance, education, and information. The free and voluntary home visiting program includes health as well as developmental screenings and resources for parents and guardians. Information and education focuses on their developing child, the wellbeing of the family, and the development as a parent. Parents enjoy learning ways they can support their child’s literacy and development through play. Monthly group connections offer parents and children a time to socialize, be creative, and bring families together while enjoying an activity. To qualify for the CCI Nevada Families First program, one must be pregnant and/or have a child under 5 years of age, and be a resident of Storey, Lyon, Mineral, Carson City, or Tonopah.
HCC: The school readiness morning is sponsored by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties in partnership with United Way and the Silver City Volunteer Library. It is part of Healthy Communities’ annual science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) summer program, with guest teachers from various organizations.

Silver City is located within a federally designated historic landmark, 3 miles from Virginia City, 7 miles from Dayton, 11 miles from Carson City, and 30 miles from Reno and Lake Tahoe.
