HCC June Meeting Presentations on Systems of Care, CARA and Plans of Care

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) hosts its June meeting on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 9am via Zoom (connection details below). The public meeting includes member updates and introductions, discussion of matters of regional importance to health and wellness, and presentations by guest speakers.

There will be two presentations by guest speakers this month.

Staff members from Lyon County Human Services, Community Chest, Inc and Lyon County Juvenile Probation will give an overview of Systems of Care in Lyon County, how to refer, and what happens after referral. A “system of care” is a spectrum of community-based services and supports for children and youth with or at risk for mental health or other challenges and their families. The system is organized into a coordinated network. Lyon County takes on the systems approach by sharing community resources to support youth and families. Nevada DCFS, Lyon County Human Services, Community Chest, Inc and Lyon County Juvenile Probation have partnered to design and implement systems of care throughout Lyon and Mineral Counties. During the presentation, they’ll explain how this effective collaboration works.

The second presentation of the June HCC meeting will by by Nevada Public Health Foundation (NPHF). They’ll offer an informational presentation on the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) and Plans of Care (PoC). CARA is federal legislation passed in 2016. The intention of CARA is to identify pregnant people who are using substances (legal or illegal) during pregnancy to provide resources and treatment as early into the pregnancy as possible. Secondly, the purpose of CARA is to identify infants potentially affected by substance use during pregnancy and provide the birth parents or caregivers with critical resources and referrals upon discharge from the hospital after delivery to ensure a successful transition home. The State Division of Child and Family Services has contracted with NPHF to connect with rural birthing hospitals, DCFS offices and community partners to identify the procedural component of CARA as well as get a working knowledge of the resources available to this unique population and to provide information on CARA, Plans of Care, and how to best assist this vulnerable population.
