Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) hosts its February meeting on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at 9am via Zoom (connection details below). The public meeting includes member updates and introductions, discussion of matters of regional importance to health and wellness, and presentations by guest speakers.
There will be two presentations by guest speakers this month. Donald Griffin, Co-Founder and Director of the nonprofit Black Wall Street Reno, will describe the organization’s goal to strengthen Black and other underserved communities in the Reno and Sparks areas. The mission of Black Wall Street Reno is to provide resources in order to increase self-sufficiency and sustainability. The organization’s work on food security, suicide prevention and mental health will be explained.
The other presentation will be an overview of the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM). The model, which was originally introduced by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), strives to create opportunities to divert individuals out of the justice system. It’s a model for collaboratively addressing root causes, mapping local services and enhancing intercepts. Eric Smith, Lyon County Juvenile Probation Chief, and Shayla Holmes, Lyon County Human Services Director, will describe local strengths and gaps and Lyon County’s success using the SIM model for adults, and the growing body of research to support its use for youth.
