Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ food pantries in Dayton, Yerington and Silver Springs are asking for donations of typical Thanksgiving side dish ingredients.
This week, the food pantries are seeking donations of canned pumpkin. Next week, they are hoping for donations of boxed stuffing. Lisa Selmi, Healthy Communities’ fiscal manager, said, “It may not be Halloween yet, but in our food pantries, we’re already thinking about helping our neighbors for Thanksgiving!“
Donations can be made at any of Healthy Communities’ food pantry locations during business hours.
The Dayton Food Pantry is located at 209 Dayton Valley Road. It is open Tuesday through Thursday, 10am-4pm. Call 246-7834 for more information.
The Silver Stage Food Pantry is located at 1775 US Hwy 50 East in Silver Springs on the campus of the Veterans Healing Camp. It is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am-4pm. Call 577-9161 for more information.
The Yerington Food Pantry is located at 124 West Bridge Street in Yerington. The pantry office is open for donation drop-offs on Tuesdays 2pm-5pm and the pantry is open for food distribution and donations on Wednesdays 10am – 5pm. For more information, call 350-4597.
Healthy Food Hub: The volunteer-powered food pantries are one part of the region’s Healthy Food Hub, an effort to increase access to and demand for affordable, nutritious and locally grown food. Healthy Communities promotes a number of initiatives and programs such as organic school and community gardens; summer farmers markets; school salad bars; cottage food entrepreneurship; and Community Roots & Shoots nonprofit gift shop and garden center. In addition, Healthy Communities’ hosts community cooking, gardening, and diabetes self-management classes that emphasize affordable, healthy menus.
