Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties meets Thursday, September 10 at 9am via Zoom (details below). This month, guest speakers include Misty Vaughan Allen, Suicide Prevention Coordinator with the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, and Cherylyn Rahr-Wood, Zero Suicide Coordinator.

Misty Vaughan Allen will give a presentation on Nevada’s Crisis Now initiative. The initiative stresses using technology for continued support, tracking people from the start to wherever they need to go to receive the right level of care. Crisis Now also focuses on utilizing Mobile crisis response units that can go wherever people in crisis are located in order to stabilize them in place, if possible. The initiative also includes a focus making sure people have a place to go, if needed, for crisis stabilization.

Cherylyn Rahr-Wood will give a presentation on the Zero Suicide framework. The commitment to suicide prevention in health care systems has been referred to as the “Zero Suicide” approach. The Zero Suicide framework is a system-wide, organizational commitment to safer suicide care in health and behavioral health care systems. The framework is based on the realization that people can fall through the cracks in a sometimes fragmented and distracted health care system.

According to David Covington, who leads the international initiatives Zero Suicide and Crisis Now, implementation of the Crisis Now model in Arizona led to the equivalent of 37 full time police officers’ time redirected to other needs in the community and a 50% reduction in cost to the community.
