Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) Meeting Agenda

Location: Silver Springs Community Center, Lahontan Room, Silver Springs, Nevada

What Is the Coalition? Healthy Communities is composed of dozens of local, state, federal and tribal group partners; hundreds of community volunteers; a board of directors and a small staff, all working together on a common mission to strengthen communities in the Lyon and Storey regions by increasing access to 1)health care; 2) affordable, locally grown food; and 3) sustainable community development opportunities that serve the common good and build local assets and self-reliance.

II. Guest Speakers

A. Melissa Ferrari, Site Director for the Veterans Resource Center in Carson City. She’ll describe resources available from the community-based nonprofit which focuses on the overall wellness and reintegration of military veterans from all eras. The primary focus of Veterans Resource Centers of America is on housing assistance, behavioral health treatment, and case management, with a holistic approach to addressing the individual needs of each veteran.

III. Announcements and Updates

A. HCC Board Members Sought: Please welcome new board member Chad Pace, Deputy District Attorney in Lyon County. Healthy Communities Coalition continues to welcome additional board members. Contact Director Wendy Madson at roots@healthycomm.org for more information.

B. Upcoming Meeting Locations and Guest Speakers: HCC will not meet in Jan. 2020 so our members have an opportunity to attend the annual Nevada Human Services award breakfast in Reno. The Awards breakfast will be held at the Peppermill Resort and Casino on Thursday, January 9 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tickets and more details: https://humanservicesnetwork.org/the-31st-annual-human-services-awards-2/

HCC’s Feb. 2020 meeting will be in Silver Springs at the Community Center on Thurs. Feb. 13 at 9am. Guest speakers will be from the U.S. Census’ Community Partnership and Engagement Program.

C. HCC has a job opening for a Healthy Aging Program Coordinator serving throughout Lyon County. The successful candidate will have experience working with diverse populations, particularly seniors, in service delivery and program coordination. This position works as a member of the SNAP-Ed team administering the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Program and the Seniors Eating Well Program at three sites across Lyon County.

D. Free Yoga Classes in Fernley: Healthy Communities is funding free yoga for those 12 and up very Monday night for the rest of this year at 6pm at 886 US HWY 95A, Fernley at Kaia Fit. Yoga can be an alternative for pain management, pain reduction and pain prevention, in addition to improving fitness, mood and psychosocial well-being.

E. Kathy McIntosh of Silver Springs was recently named Volunteer of the Year by NAMI Western Nevada “for the amazing work she is doing as a NAMI instructor and group leader.” Kathy also manages HCC’s Silver Stage Food Pantry. IV. Mingle Time: We’ve set aside extra time this month for members to enjoy holiday treats and connect with one another.

V. Next Meetings: HCC meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 9am, except the months of January and July. There is no January 2020 meeting.
