As part of the Nevada Arts Council’s new Basin to Range Exchange (BRX) Program, Sierra Arts Foundation, Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties, the Resident Artist Program in Silver City, and teachers in rural schools are engaging in a special project.
The BRX Program includes strategic rural/urban partnerships involving the arts. As part of the BRX program, Sierra Arts is bringing training to rural elementary and middle school teachers in the Storey and Lyon region on integrating arts education into students’ core academic subject areas such as math, science, and social studies. Teachers will earn 1/2-credit in continuing education through the Nevada Department of Education and receive complimentary art supplies and sample arts lesson plans for their classrooms.
In addition, Sierra Arts and the Resident Artist Program in the historic Comstock town of Silver City are exploring ways to bring the rural artist in residence program’s visiting artists from around the world to Sierra Arts in Reno for lectures, exhibitions and performances.
BRX is a program of Community Arts Development with the Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. The Community Arts Development program supports long-term structural change in communities across Nevada through strategic planning, community engagement, and artistic design.
Nevada Arts Council receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the state of Nevada.
