Last Dayton Farmers Market of the Season is Thursday, Sept 19th: Join us for a special “Third Thursday” event at our last farmers market day of the season from 4pm-7pm on the corner of Hwy 50 and 60 Second Avenue in Dayton. In addition to fresh, local produce, eggs, jams and more, his month’s “Third Thursday” event features delicious Indian cooking from Rupa’s Kitchen, live music, and family fun with lots of great nonprofits and community groups serving our region.
Rupa’s Cooking Demos: Free cooking demonstrations open to everyone Sept 18, 19, 25 and 26 at HCC’s Dayton Food Pantry from 10am-2pm. Learn more about Indian, Indo-Mexican and Fusion cooking with Rupa, a passionate cooking instructor. She’ll demonstrate how to incorporate some of the foods at the Dayton Food Pantry into affordable and healthy dishes crackling with flavor.
Rummage Sale for a Good Cause Saturday Sept. 21 from 8am-4pm, Healthy Communities’ pavilion at 209 Dayton Valley Road. Items include new sinks, refrigerators, dishes, pots and pans, glassware, garden supplies, and more at amazing prices. For more information, call (775) 350-9250.
Nevada Human Development Corporation is sponsoring a free Community Health Clinic on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9am -2pm at 124 North Main Street in Yerington. The event includes free flu vaccinations, physical evaluations, diabetes screenings, blood pressure checks, plus free food, information from local groups, Zumba dance and yoga! Sí, hablamos español! On Sept. 18, Sept 25, and Oct 2, the visiting veterans resource group at each pantry will be TMCC’s Veterans Upward Bound (see above). Veterans Upward Bound assists veterans in the development of academic and other skills necessary for success in a program of postsecondary education such as college. The program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in the core subject areas.
Diabetes Self-Management Program, Mondays Oct. 7 to Nov. 18 from 9am-11:30am at the Dayton Valley Branch Library: Please reserve your seat for this free Diabetes Self-Management program in Dayton for people 18 and over living with type 2 diabetes. Participants will receive educational tools to increase their self-efficacy in managing diabetes. The program also facilitates group sharing, brainstorming, and problem solving. The class is being taught by Carah Solemsaas, Health and Wellness Graduate Assistant with the Sanford Center for Aging at UNR, and Jenny Claypool of Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties. Fall Harvest Golf Tournament (“Drive Out Hunger”) with Breakfast and Lunch on Saturday, Oct. 19th at the Dayton Valley Golf Course will raise funds for HCC’s Dayton Food Pantry. Play a round, sponsor a hole, cheer your friends on all while bringing nourishment for those in need in the Dayton area.The event is hosted by Js’ Bistro and the golf course. The day starts at 9:30am. Enter as a single player ($120) or as a 4-person team.
