Virginia City, Nevada – Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties September breakfast meeting is on Thursday, Sept 12 at 9am at the Storey County Community Center in Virginia City.
Guest speakers this month are Ginger Paulsen and Cheryl Price from Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, and Robin Reedy from state of Nevada chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
In addition, the agenda includes discussion and updates on issues of regional importance across Lyon and Storey counties, such as access to health care and to local food, and strategies for sustainable, community-based development.
The Storey County Community Center is located at 175 Carson Street, Virginia City, NV 89440 (behind the town pool and park, in the same building as the Storey Library).
What Is the Coalition? Whether its organic school gardens, mobile dental clinics, tobacco and opioid use prevention, STEAM activities, job skills training, or suicide prevention, Healthy Communities takes a multi-faceted approach to promoting opportunities for health and wellness with a prevention first approach. Healthy Communities is comprised of dozens of local, state, federal and tribal group partners; hundreds of community volunteers; a board of directors and staff, all working together on a common mission to strengthen communities in the Lyon and Storey regions by increasing access to 1)health care; 2) affordable, locally grown food; and 3) sustainable community-based development opportunities that serve the common good and build local assets and self-reliance.
October -January Meeting Locations and Guest Speakers (HCC meets on the second Thursday of each month at 9am in various locations in Storey and Lyon):
HCC’s October meeting is at the Silver Springs Community Center with guest speakers from both Care Chest and Medicare (Access to Health Care).
HCC’s November 2019 meeting will be in Yerington at the Boys & Girls Club main gym, with guest speaker Serena Evans, Policy Specialist with the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence. As an added treat, immediately after the meeting at around 11am, BGC is offering a tour of their beautiful new Teen Center!
HCC’s December 2019 meeting will be in Silver Springs at the Community Center.
HCC’s January 2020 meeting will be in Silver Springs at the Community Center. Wendy Madson and Lisa Godenick of HCC will give a one hour presentation on Empowered Health Consciousness, a tool for prevention and creating awareness around how people deal with chronic pain and stress.
