The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties August 9th breakfast meeting includes guest speakers on three important topics. We’ll also take time to honor our hardworking AmeriCorps and VISTA members who have served the Lyon County region so well this year. The public is warmly invited to the meeting which takes place at 9am in the Lahontan Room of the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft Churchill Street, Silver Springs, Nevada 89429.
Thank you, AmeriCorps and VISTA Members: During the meeting, Healthy Communities will honor a dozen hard working AmeriCorps and VISTA members who have dedicated a year of service to the Lyon County region. They have served on projects throughout the area, including in Silver City, Dayton, Yerington, Fernley, Silver Springs and beyond through food pantries, community and school gardens, senior centers, cooking classes, school classrooms, children’s programs, and more. They used a “Healthy Futures Strategy”, enhancing and adding value to what already exists in communities, and working in partnership with many groups.
In addition, guest speakers will offer information about three important topics during the meeting.
Sandi TenBoer of Nevada Department of Veterans Services Health and Wellness will describe Northern Nevada State Veterans Home’s skilled care nursing home.
Carson City Health and Human Services staff will offer presentations on two evidence-based curriculums regarding adolescent health: Making Proud Choices (MPC) and also Promoting Health Among Teens (PHAT).
The final speaker will be Jessica Johnson, Health Educator for Southern Nevada Health District, who will share ideas and possibilities around syringe vending machines as an HIV prevention strategy in rural Nevada (a joint Nevada State HIV Prevention Program and SNHD project). Directly following the Healthy Communities’ meeting, interested people are invited to assess community readiness, potential issues or concerns, etc. at a special stakeholders meeting.
The stakeholders meeting, where further thoughts on the HIV prevention strategy will be gathered, takes place directly after the Coalition meeting at 11:15am at the same location.
