Dayton, Nevada – On Saturday, September 9, more than a dozen communities throughout Nevada are participating in the annual Walk in Memory – Walk for Hope event.
The goal of the event is to increase awareness of the effects suicide has on our nation and state, and to remember those who have been lost to suicide.
At Healthy Communities Coalition’s headquarters at 209 Dayton Valley Road in Dayton, the event kicks off at 10am with keynote speaker Peggy Edwards who will describe some of the region’s many suicide prevention resources that can help instill hope and promote healing. “We are so fortunate to have Peggy Edwards as our keynote speaker,” said walk organizer Quest Lakes. “Peggy is a highly educated professional who is known in the region for her compassion and has been named one of this year’s winners of the statewide “Social Justice Heroes” award.
Peggy’s talk will be followed by a community walk of 1.5 miles through Dayton near the schools.
Sponsorship: Those who register for the special event are joining a nationwide community of thousands of people who are participating. In Nevada, the Walk is sponsored by the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and supported by the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, along with many community partners.
Partners: In Dayton, Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is one of the community partners helping to organize a walk, and director Wendy Madson encouraged people to “ask your family, friends and co-workers to walk as a team. You’ll be amazed by how many people want to help.” Janett Massolo, Walk Coordinator for the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention explained that, “because there is help, there is hope. The concerted efforts of the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention, the Office of Suicide Prevention and the many local groups and coalitions across the state hosting events such as the “Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope” will help make Nevada a healthier place to live.”
HOW TO REGISTER: Register online, or register onsite the day of the event. Walkers will receive t-shirts, resource bags, and more.
