HCC Meeting Features Employment Programs, AmeriCorps, NNDA, School Gardens

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties holds its August breakfast meeting on Thursday August 10th at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street.

Guest speakers include Valerie Melendez, Tribal Economic Development Director with Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA), and Craig Butcher, Veteran Employment Services Representative with Nevada Job Connect.

Agenda items include presentations on NNDA initiatives, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and the Silver State Works Program for employers. In addition, Lyon County farmers, teachers and Healthy Communities staff will describe strategies for sustaining and expanding the school district’s existing 11 school gardens that they learned at an Edible School Yard Intensive training in Berkeley this summer.

AmeriCorps Members Honored: The meeting will also include a ceremony to honor the ten AmeriCorps members who have worked in partnership with Healthy Communities this year, serving Lyon County citizens through work with school and community gardens, food pantries, homebound elders, healthy cooking and organic gardening classes, teen leadership camp, farmers markets, weed and fire hazard clean up, early childhood development assessments, and more.
