Healthy Communities Jan. Meeting Canceled

The January Healthy Communities Coalition (HCC) meeting has been canceled, because the Nevada Human Services Network award breakfast is at the same time. Many HCC staff and group partners are looking forward to attending to honor the very deserving awardees during this special event.

The Feb. 2017  HCC meeting will take place as normal on Thurs Feb 9th at 9am in Silver Springs. 2017 January- Feb Highlights (see HCC’s website under “Current Events” for complete details)

A“Stuff a Police Car with Food Donations” event will be held at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton on January 7th from 10am until 4pm.

The Dayton Chili Cookers are again partnering with Healthy Communities’ Dayton Food Pantry for a big chili cookoff and Superbowl party to benefit the Pantry, Sunday, February 5th at the Dayton Valley Golf Course and Grill. Chili cooks are welcome – please contact John Peters at 443-8015 for more information about the rules.

Healthy Communities is developing a new food pantry in Yerington, with leadership from HCC’s Shannon Juntunen and AmeriCorp’s Brittany McDonald. If you’d like to donate, please contact HCC at 246-7550. More news soon!

Healthy Communities sponsors a free cooking class and dinner on the 3rd Monday of each month at 5:30pm at the Dayton Community Center (next class is on Mon Jan. 23rd). The monthly cooking class and dinner with dietitian Kim Mason is canceled for Feb, but will resume in March 2017.

Danish journalist Peter Krogh Andersen will be back later this winter, and will further study and write about communities in Lyon County. Peter has a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Denmark in International Politics, with a focus on the Middle East. His dissertation was on Turkish foreign policy in the 1990s and 2000s. He also attended Bilkent Üniversitesi, with a focus on Turkey and International Politics, and the American University of Beirut with a focus in Middle Eastern Studies. His undergradate degree was in journalism from the University of Southern Denmark.
