Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties has been hosting summer camps for Northwestern Nevada’s brightest young leaders for over a decade now. This year, the free training for youth from the Lyon, Storey and Douglas region for ages 12-17 is located at a beautiful woodland camp at Lake Tahoe with its own private beach next to Edgewood Golf Course. Camp dates are June 1st-3rd, 2016.
What Will Happen at the Camp: The theme for the “Leadership Out Loud” (LOL) camp is “Heroes Vs. Villians.” Through games and group activities, youth will learn additional skills in public speaking, team work, clear communication, leadership skills, and evidence-based strategies for peer to peer education that helps prevent and reduce use of tobacco and other drugs.
Workshops titles include 1)How to be your own superhero, 2) tobacco use prevention strategies 3)leading by example and 4) values and communication.
Fun: In addition to learning valuable skills to take back to their communities, camp attendees will also have time for supervised activities at the camp’s private beach, volleyball and basketball courts, and will choose from activities like drumming circles, night time Ultimate Frisbee, glow-in-the-dark volleyball, Heroes vs. Villains Firefly, beach relay race and “tug of oar”.
Application Deadline and Transportation: Applications will be accepted until May 20th. Please contact Tammy Watts at tsutton@lyoncsd.org for registration packets. Transportation will be provided by bus from Silver Springs, Fernley, Dayton and Yerington.
