Weight Loss Support Group, Exercise and Cooking Classes at Dayton Community Center

Dayton, Nevada – Dayton offers lots of ways to get and stay healthy and fit. In addition to some beautiful and affordable venues for outdoor exercise, such as the Dayton State Park and Rolling A Open Space and Disc Golf Course, there are also weekly Jazz Robics and Zumba Gold classes, weekly meetings of a weight loss support group, and free monthly healthy cooking classes inside the Dayton Community Center.

Weight Loss Support Group: Since September of 2014, Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) has been hosting a weekly weight loss support group every Wednesday at 5:30pm at the Dayton Valley Community Center at 170 Pike Street. Participants report that the meetings are fun and full of support, with members sharing nutritious recipes and health and fitness tips.

Each week the group focuses on a different topic. Upcoming topics include fixing bad health habits, healthy dinners, happiness, boosting success, and macronutrients.

The Weight Loss group meetings are free, although members are asked for a once a month donation of $5 to the Dayton Preservation Committee for use of the historic building.

The purpose of the group is supporting area residents who would like to support each other in safe, healthy ways to lose excess weight and increase wellness. Classes are open to men and women of all ages. For more information about the Weight Loss Support Group, please contact Lisa Selmi at HCC at 246-7550.

Zumba Gold: There is an option to also attend a Zumba Gold class with a certified instructor after each meeting ($5 per Zumba class). Zumba Gold is a modified Zumba® class that recreates the original dance exercise moves at a lower-intensity.

Fun Fit Jazz Robics: HCC also sponsors a daytime class by Sheila called Fun Fit Jazz Robics that includes simple, fun moves and appeals to adults of any age. The class takes place on Mondays from 4pm-5pm. For more information, call Sheila at 721-2874.

Free Healthy Cooking Class: In addition, HCC sponsors a free healthy cooking class with dietitian Kim Mason on the 3rd Monday of each month at 5:30pm at the Dayton Community Center. For more information, call Alie Trier at 246-7834.

The Weight Loss Support Group, exercise classes and cooking classes are all hubs in Healthy Communities’ regional Health and Wellness Hub, a collaborative effort among many groups to increase access to health care services, preventative care such as immunizations, and education about healthy and sober lifestyles, good nutrition and fitness.
