HCC Meets on Thurs Feb 11th, 2016: Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey holds its regularly scheduled monthly public meeting on Thursday, Feb. 11th at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center. Join us for breakfast and coffee, discussion and planning on items of regional importance, and updates from diverse Coalition partners from the fields of education, health care, law enforcement, the arts, positive youth development, social services, jail diversion, mental health services, substance abuse treatment and prevention, food security, agriculture, job training, etc.

5K Race on Saturday, Feb. 13 Benefits HCC’s Dayton Food Pantry: Brady Heuseer’s Eagle Scout Project is a 5K Run with food donations for the local student weekend food backpack program as the registration “fee.” The more you donate, the longer head start you get! The Dayton Food Pantry’s backpack program helps provide local students, K-12, with food for the weekend. Please bring nonperishable items such as flavored instant oatmeal packets. Free Cooking Class Mon Feb 22: Join dietitian Kim Mason for a free healthy cooking demonstration, followed by dinner, on Monday Feb 22 at 5:30pm.  Once a month, Healthy Communities Coalition hosts a free cooking demo and dinner at the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street. It’s free, no need to register, and everyone is welcome. Questions? Call Alie at HCC’s Dayton Food Pantry at 246-7834, Monday – Thursday between 10am – 4pm.

Weight Loss Seminar with Nationally Known Speaker Dr. Monica Ganz Feb 20: Looking to make some healthy lifestyle changes? Healthy Communities Coalition welcomes nationally renowned speaker Dr. Monica Ganz to the Dayton Community Center on Saturday February 20. Admission is $15.00, which includes a healthy lunch, humor, perspective and guidance to a healthier life! Space is limited. Please RSVP to Jenny or Lisa at Healthy Communities at 246-7550.

Fun Fit Jazz Robics (Exercise Class): Thursdays at the Dayton Community Center from 2:30-3:30pm: Come exercise with Sheila with tunes from the ’60s to now. Fun Fit Jazz Robics includes simple, fun moves. It’s not only a great class for seniors, but also for adults of any age with an afternoon off. This daytime fitness class is sponsored by HCC. Donations to the local preservation group to help with upkeep of the historic building are welcomed. For more information, contact Shelia at 721-2874.

Weight Loss Support Group: Healthy Communities Coalition hosts s weight loss support group which meets every Wednesday at 5:30pm at the Dayton Valley Community Center at 170 Pike Street. Participants report that the meetings are fun and full of support, with members sharing nutritious recipes and health and fitness tips. There is an option to also attend a Zumba Gold class after each meeting ($5 per Zumba class). Zumba Gold is a modified Zumba® class that recreates the original dance exercise moves at a lower-intensity. The Weight Loss group meetings are free, although members are asked for a once a month donation of $5 to the Dayton Preservation Committee for use of the historic building. The purpose of the group is supporting area residents who would like to support each other in safe, healthy ways to lose excess weight and increase wellness.
