Child Care Centers Offered Free Training & Incentives Through Storey/Lyon Coalition

Lyon and Storey Regions ? Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is offering Lyon and Storey area child care providers free training, incentives, and events as part of an early childhood social-emotional learning and development initiative, funded in part through the federal Safe Schools, Healthy Students grant, and further supported through the ?Health and Wellness Hub.?

On June 3rd, 2015 the Coalition is hosting an orientation to the Nevada Registry?s ?Quality Rating Information System? (QRIS). This system provides support for a site self-assessment for child care centers, and also a mentor to work with child care centers on goals the centers would like to achieve. The orientation will be given by Cindy Johnson of the Office of Early Learning and Development. This FREE orientation is scheduled for Wed June 3rd from 6:15 to 8pm at the Dayton Valley Branch Library. Light dinner snacks will be provided.

Healthy Communities is also supporting one person per child care center to attend a FREE training in Parents As Teachers. The foundational training is scheduled for June 8-10, 2015 for those with 0-3 year olds and from July 16-17, 2015 for those with 3-5 year olds. Please let us know if you are interested in participating and we will send you the link to register your profile and register for one of the two trainings, depending on which is most appropriate for your organization. The value of this training is $800 per person.

In addition, five child care centers will be selected to receive funding of up to $1,000 to support training in the EB Social-Emotional Learning and Development curriculum and to purchase supplies and manuals associated with the curriculum.

These events, and many others, are part of an early childhood social-emotional learning and development initiative with  Healthy Communities Coalition. As part of this initiative, the Coalition has 3 key goals we?re asking many groups and families to join with us to reach. These include:

1) Increase by 30% children ages 5 and younger that have routine developmental screenings using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire ? Social Emotional (ASQ-SE) and the EPSDT. (300 by September 30, 2015)

2) Provide referrals and follow-up services when needed.

3) Increase by 5 the number of childcare centers, Family Resource Center Early Childhood programs and/or home-based care provider settings that are implementing an evidence-based Social Emotional Learning Program with fidelity.

Recently, many child care centers and staff from various agencies participated in a series of trainings Healthy Communities Coalition offered to show how to use the Ages and Stages Questionnaire ? Social Emotional (ASQ-SE) screening tool.

If you work with young children and have not yet received training in how to administer the ASQ-SE screening tool but would like to, please let us know and Healthy Communities will do one of two things:

1) schedule another ASQ-SE training so that you and your staff can receive training;
2) or arrange to have some of our screeners come to your center this summer and screen your children using the ASQ-SE screening tool.

To register for training or for more information, please contact Deborah Loesch Griffin, the Coalition?s consultant for the Health and Wellness Hub, at 843-2275 or email trnpt@aol.com.
